Bookshelf speakers always sound best at ear height, away from the wall, precisely positioned, and off the floor. The best way to set up bookshelf speakers is with floor stands. You can make your own stands with some fairly basic tools. Some lumber warehouses will even cut your lumber to size either for free or for a small fee, taking away the need for a power saw. Having the warehouse cut it usually also assures completely square angles so that when you assemble the stand, the pieces will mate precisely.

Things you need

Table saw or skilsaw with a rip guideYardstickDrillAdjustable countersink drill bit3-inch Phillips-head countersink wood screwsUntreated 4x4-inch by 6-foot AA lumberTop choice 2x12 inch by 8 foot kiln-dried plankTop choice 2x10 inch by 8 foot kiln-dried plankWood glueSandpaperWood stain

Instructions

1 Cut two 10-inch squares from the 10-inch wide plank. Cut two 12-inch squares from the 12-inch wide plank. The small squares are for the stand tops, the large ones for the bottoms.

2 Cut two 31-inch lengths of 4x4 inch lumber

3 Using a yardstick, align a 4x4 at the centre of each plank square and trace a faint pencil line on the planking around the 4x4. Apply wood glue to the end of a 4x4, 1/2-inch in from the edge. Place it on end inside the traced square on a 12x12 plank. Repeat for the other stand. Apply glue 1/2-inch in from the edge on the tops of both 4x4 posts. Place the 10x10-inch squares marked side down on top of the posts. Let dry overnight.

4 For each stand, Drill three inch deep screw holes with the countersink bit through the top and bottom planking and into the corners of the 4x4, about 1/2 inch in from the 4x4 corners. After you make each hole, fasten a wood screw loosely. When you get four done, tighten them all down.

5 Sand all surfaces and lightly round corners with 200-grit sandpaper. Stain or paint.

Tips and warnings

You can stain light-coloured wood with the wood colour of your choice, and finish it with a varnish or urethane finish that will give it a glossy or semigloss finish.

Do not use treated lumber, because it does not stain or finish well.
