How to Make Window Cling Art

Glass paints and liquid leading simulate the look of stained glass. There are a variety of styles available to you to decorate your windows in keeping with your home's decor, to celebrate holidays and seasons, or to brighten a child's environment. Window cling art is a type of window painting in which the designs are painted on a flat surface then peeled and applied to the window or mirror. The window cling art can be easily removed and stored for later use. With this easy painting technique, even children can create their own window cling art.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Outline designsClear styrene plastic sheet or freezer paperTapeLiquid leadingGlass paintsTooth picksCraft knife

Instructions

1 Place the outline pattern under the plastic or freezer paper and tape in place onto a smooth, level work surface to prevent shifting. If you are using freezer (waxed) paper, place it shiny side up.

2 Apply liquid leading over the lines of the design, starting with the longer lines and filling in the shorter ones. You can work from top to bottom, depending on which method is more comfortable. The leading should be equal thickness as much as possible. Let it dry overnight.

3 Fill in the areas inside the design with glass paint by squeezing the bottle slowly and steadily until the areas are filled just below the top edge of leading. Because this paint shrinks, applying a thick layer makes the window cling art stronger against tearing.

4 Prick any air bubbles with tooth picks and allow the window cling to dry completely. The drying time varies on climate conditions. The window cling art should dry thoroughly and have time to cure so it does not tear away from the plastic or freezer paper

5 Gently peel the design from the plastic sheet or freezer paper. Use a craft knife to lift it off if it is resistant. Dampen the window cling's backside before applying it to a window; this helps it adhere better.

Tips and warnings

Gallery glass paint by Plaid works well for this project. It is thick and easy to apply. Marabu Fun & Fancy Window Color also works well.

Coloured craft glue works as a nice substitute to glass paint, especially when crafting with children.

Use static window film instead of styrene plastic or freezer paper. After the design is dry, cut around the shape instead of peeling it off. The static film works as a permanent backing on the window cling art.
