How to make yakisoba-pan

A noodle sandwich may seem totally unnatural, but once you try this Japanese specialty you will be an instant convert. It’s a popular quick and cheap snack throughout Japan, yakisoba noodles are pan fried with vegetables before being placed in a soft hot dog bun and topped with dried seaweed flakes, pickled ginger and yakisoba sauce. It’s time to make the yakisoba-pan your next go-to late night drunk dish.

Heat wok

Place a wok over high heat and pour in 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Sauté 1 onion (thinly sliced), stir for two minutes. Add 1 carrot (sliced into match sticks) and sauté for another minute. Then, add sliced red and green bell peppers and sauté for about 30 seconds. Turn off heat and set aside.

Cook noodles

In a separate small pot, boil water and cook the noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Prepare yakisoba sauce

Meanwhile, make the yakisoba sauce by combining 4 tablespoons oyster sauce, 2 tsp soy sauce, 1 tsp brown sugar, and 1 tsp sesame oil. Whisk well until combined.

Mix together

Add another tablespoon of vegetable oil to the same wok and turn the heat back on high. Once the wok becomes hot, add the drained noodles and stir. Then, add the yakisoba sauce to the wok and stir well. Make sure the sauce coats the noodles and vegetables entirely.

Assemble the sandwich

Pile the hot noodles into a sliced hot dog bun and top with pickled ginger, dried seaweed (optional), and a spoonful of yakisoba sauce. Serve hot.
