How to Measure a Cello Itself

Most informational sites give you the standard measurements of a cello and how to determine if a cello is the correct size for you. When you measure your cello, it is usually to figure out what size class your cello fits. There are two sets of cello sizes: the European Standard and the Suzuki Standard. No matter how you plan to convert the measurements, how to measure your cello remains the same.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Tape measureCello

Instructions

1 Place the beginning of the tape measure at the top of the back of the cello. This is where the neck meets the body.

2 Measure straight down the middle of the back to the bottom of the wooden portion of the cello, otherwise known as the body. Do not include the metal stand at the bottom. There is a bit of a curve in the back of the wood of the cello, but the displacement is minimal and considered standard in the measurement.

3 Write this measurement down as the body length of the cello.

4 Place the tape measure at the top of the back of the "neck" of the cello. The top of the neck is where the curve holds the pegs that adjust the strings of the instrument.

5 Measure down the back of the neck to the joint that binds the body with the neck --- the same point you measured the body from.

6 Write down this measurement and add it to the body length of the cello. The total equals the total length of the cello.

7 Visualise the back of the cello and decide the widest point, which will be about a third of the way up from the bottom of the cello to the midpoint. It is where the bottom curve is the widest.

8 Place the beginning of the tape measure on the left side and measure across to the right side at the widest point. Mark the number down, and you have the maximum width.

Tips and warnings

With these numbers you can determine the size of your cello. The size will be anywhere from full size to 1/10 size in the European Standard or 1/8 size in the Suzuki Standard.

You can determine the size without the width of the cello, as the body length and total length vary enough to determine your cello size.

Find a stable place to measure your cellos. Laying it on its side will help keep it safe from damage.
