How to Measure a Machine Screw

Machine screws differ from wood screws on the tip of the screw. A wood screw has a pointed tip to bite into wood when you drive it in. A machine screw has a flat tip and attaches two metal objects together. There are two main types of machine screws. They are the pan-head and the flathead versions. Measuring the length of each type of screw differs from each other.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Measuring tape

Instructions

1 Measure the length of a pan-head screw in millimetres from under the head where it meets the threads to the end of the threads on the bottom of the screw. A pan-head screw has a dome-shaped head that protrudes outward in the centre.

2 Measure the length of a flathead screw in millimetres from the top of the head to the bottom of the screws threads. A flat head screw appears flat when you hold it in front of you horizontal to the floor.

3 Measure the diameter of a machine screw in inches to the hundredths. The hundredths place is two numbers behind a decimal. For example, a common size machine screw is 8mm by 1.25 inches.

4 Count the threads per inch on the screw. Lay a measuring tape on a flat surface. Lay the screw on top of the measuring tape with the screw head overhanging the measuring tape tip. Use a sharp pencil to touch and count each thread from the measuring tape tip to the 1-inch mark on the tape.

Tips and warnings

Machine screws are notated in a number system. The first number is the diameter, the second number is the thread count per inch and the third number is the length. For example a 1/4 by 20 by 6 is 1/4 inch in diameter, has 20 threads per inch and is 6 inches long.

Most hardware stores have a screw sizing chart on their display to match your screw size to.
