How to Measure Infants for Shoes

Those tiny toes are so cute, it may seem a shame to cover them in shoes. When your infant needs footwear, however, make sure you buy the correct size. Measure infants for shoes carefully---those dainty little feet need shoes that fit properly. If shoes are too tight and pinch at any point on the foot, painful sores may show up.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Instructions

1 Take your infant to a shoe store that employs someone trained professionally to fit children's shoes. Have your child's feet professionally sized.

2 Situate your child so the shoe fitter has access to both bare or sock-covered feet. It is optimal to measure her feet while standing, if possible. Help the shoe fitter manoeuvre your child's feet to measure her using the fitting gauge.

3 Compare the measurements of both feet. If one foot is larger than the other, use the larger size when choosing a shoe.

Tips and warnings

Measure your child's feet every six weeks to ensure your child's current shoes are not becoming too tight. Because a baby cannot tell you clearly that his shoes hurt, you must check often to make sure your child has not outgrown them.

There is no uniformity in shoe sizing; therefore, expect variation in shoe sizes for different brands of shoes. Always have your child's feet sized and then try the shoes on before you purchase shoes. Do not purchase shoes based on size alone. If your child can walk, encourage the child to walk in the shoes prior to purchase if at all possible.
