How to measure the strength of a DSL signal

There are many factors that affect the strength of your DSL signal. A primary difference in your speed is the location from your home to the central office. There is little you can do about changing your distance from your home to the central office. But using an advanced DSL modem, you will be able to maximise the signal strength of your DSL. You can measure your signal strength by accessing speed tests that are available for free on the Internet.

Skill level:Moderate

Instructions

1 Locate and access a speed-test website. Speed test websites will --- based on your location --- download and upload a small file and will measure the length of time and how fast it took for the upload and download to take place. Speakeasy, Bandwidthplace and CNet.com offers speed tests. (See Resources)

2 Click on the location that is closest to you to conduct a speed test, if requested. Choosing the location closest to you is important because the download and upload test will be based on the closest server to your location, which is similar to the central office for your DSL service.

3 Click "Test" and wait while the test is conducted. Different speed tests have different interfaces in how they measure data. For example, Speakeasy has a speed test that resembles a speedometer on your car, yet your MPH is replaced with megabits per second.
