Gel coat is a fibreglass paint consisting of fibreglass resin that is pigmented with colour. Gel coat is not only a paint; it also is a protective layer with additives that protect from ultraviolet rays. The consistency of gel coat is very thick and requires a gel coat spray gun for application. Metal flake is commonly used on gel coat and is basically clear gel coat with metal flake in it. This is applied over the coloured gel coat. All gel coat and gel coating supplies can be found at your local marine supply store.

Instructions

1 Clean the gel coat with a mild detergent and a sponge. Remove any dirt build-up that may be on the surface. Let the surface dry.

2 Wipe the surface with a rag and acetone to remove any leftover grease or dirt.

3 Mix the metal flake gel coat with the catalyst following the recommendations on the containers. Use a small bucket and stir stick to thoroughly mix the gel coat. Add the catalysed gel coat to the spray gun.

4 Put on a respirator and spray the first coat of metal flake onto the gel coat in even, consistent strokes. Hold the spray gun tip at least 12 inches away from the surface while you are spraying to avoid runs. Let the first coat harden and apply the second coat. Let the metal flake gel coat harden.

5 Apply a coat of gel coat wax to the surface and let it dry. Buff the wax using an electric buffer until the gel coat is shiny.

Wear a respirator when working with fibreglass materials.
