How to Paint Over Lacquer

Lacquer is a clear varnish used to seal and protect kitchen cabinets and interior woodwork. After completely drying, lacquer forms a hard and glossy finish on wood. Lacquer is sleek and highly durable, but without proper surface preparation, the hardness and glossiness make adhesion difficult for household paints. Painting directly over a lacquer finish without preparation could cause discolouration in the paint finish. Additionally, peeling paint could occur while wiping the wood for cleaning purposes. Although lacquer dries hard, the right preparation breaks down the film and allows paint to bond well to the surface.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

150-grit sandpaperPaint brushTack clothPainter's glovesOil-based primer sealerPaint trayBucketStir stickPaint rollerEnamel

Instructions

1 Sand the lacquer finish in the direction of the wood grain, using a piece of 150-grit sandpaper. Sand the wood uniformly in even sections, firmly enough to expose the surface of the wood and remove the glossiness.

2 Dust off the sanded wood with a paint brush. Wipe the freshly-sanded wood with a tack cloth to remove the fine layer of sanding dust from the surface.

3 Don a pair of painter's gloves and pour an oil-based primer-sealer into a clean paint tray or bucket. Mix the primer-sealer with a wooden stir stick.

4 Brush the primer-sealer into the corners and along the edges of the wood, using a paint brush. Cut-in a strip of primer approximately three inches wide. Avoid leaving heavy primer on the surface of the wood.

5 Dip a paint roller into the primer container and roll a thin layer of primer onto the wood, overlapping the cut-in primer leftover from the paint brush. Allow the primer to completely dry according to the recommendation noted on the can.

6 Dump oil-based or latex enamel into a clean paint tray. Oil-based enamel is highly durable and recommended for kitchen cabinets. Use latex enamel for trim and window sills.

7 Brush and roll the enamel paint onto the primed wood, using the same method for the primer application. Allow the first enamel coat to completely dry. Oil-based enamel requires longer drying time. Apply a second coat of enamel to achieve solid paint coverage.
