How to Paint Walls in Bar Code With the Same Color of Paint & Different Finishes

One way to add interest to your living area is by painting your walls in a bar code pattern. However, do not settle for the standard black-and-white bar code pattern. Instead, use the same colour paint with two different finishes. Gloss finish next to a matt finish not only distinguishes the bar code lines, but also looks more sophisticated than the black-and-white option. Although it's more subtle, this pattern will give any room more interest than just a plain, one-dimension wall colour.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Matt latex paintPaint trayPaint rollers and brushesPainter's masking tapeLevelGlossy latex paint

Instructions

1 Paint the entire wall with matt latex paint in one colour using rollers or brushes. Allow the first coat to dry, then apply a second coat to fully cover the wall. Allow the matt layer to dry for at least 24 hours.

2 Take a long piece of painter's tape and attach one end to the top of the wall where the wall and ceiling intersect. Pull the tape down to the bottom of the wall.

3 Place a level along the strip of tape to ensure that it is perfectly straight. Press the tape into place with your fingers all the way down the strip.

4 Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the entire wall. Keep in mind that the space between the tape pieces will be the thickness of each bar code bar. Change the width and spacing of the bars over the entire wall.

5 Brush a layer of glossy latex paint, in the same colour as the matt layer, in between the pieces of tape that represent bars. Apply another layer, then allow the paint to dry.

6 Slowly peel away the painter's tape from bottom to top to reveal the bar code pattern.

Tips and warnings

Purchase a smaller container of the glossy paint, as you will not need that much.

Use gloss acrylic sealer instead of glossy paint. Gloss sealer is a clear, brush-on liquid that can be painted over matt finishes to make them shine.
