How to Polish a Shotgun Chamber

Many gun owners are satisfied with a functioning shotgun, but wonder if there are any improvements they can make at home. It can be difficult to determine whether your shotgun's chamber needs a good polishing. Most shotguns don't need their chambers polished, unless it has problems ejecting shells. If you shine a light into the chamber, most of the irregularities, pits and fouling are disguised by the glare, and these can decrease the weapon's functionality. Polishing the chamber of your shotgun eliminates these inconsistencies.

Instructions

1 Disassemble your shotgun according to the manufacturer's guidelines so you can access the chamber more easily.

2 Secure the chamber in a padded gun vice with the bottom oriented upward, and keep a cloth or garbage can under the chamber to catch the dripping oil.

3 Apply Flex-Hone oil to the chamber. Insert the Flex-Hone chamber polisher into the chamber, with the stem running through the barrel.

4 Turn the Flex-Hone slowly as it orients itself inside the chamber, and only then increase the speed of the drill. Work the Flex-Hone back and forth in a slow and gradual movement. Run it for a few minutes, then apply more oil. Continue polishing; don't remove any of the slurry that's accumulating in the chamber.

5 Clean and check the chamber. If it needs more polishing, continue with the medium-grit Flex-Hone; if not, finish off with the fine-grit Flex-Hone, then clean the chamber thoroughly. Reassemble and enjoy your polished shotgun.

Tips and warnings

This task can be accomplished with 4-0 steel wool and a wooden dowel, as well, but the process takes more time.

Work slowly and gradually. You're not trying to change the shape of the chamber; you just want to remove burrs and irregularities.
