How to Put in a Fence

Many homeowners need only a lightweight fence to demarcate the border of their property and keep in a small pet or two, and a picket fence is well-suited to this purpose. Best of all, modern prefabricated picket fence kits eliminate the need to laboriously set up fence rails and then straighten and install every single picket one at a time by coming with ready-made panels of rails and pickets. This greatly simplifies the process of putting in a fence.

Skill level:Easy

Instructions

1 Look up the width of the fence panels in the instructions that came with your fence kit. Your panels reach from the middle of one fence post to the middle of the next post, so knowing this distance is critical to setting up your posts at proper intervals.

2 Walk along the perimeter of your intended fence line with a measuring wheel, and hammer in a stake at each interval as determined in Step 1. Tie a string to the corner stakes in the fence line, and check the line for straightness. Move any stakes that are out of line.

3 Dig out the post holes with a shovel and a posthole digger. The depth of the holes needs to be uniform and equal to 1/3 of the length of your posts.

4 Install your first fence post by dropping it into the hole and setting it vertically straight with the help of a level. Shovel dirt into the hole and compact it with a tamping rod in stages, until the hole is filled in and the post firmly set in compacted soil. Repeat for each fence post.

5 Set the rails of your first fence panel into position, so the ends of the rails are at the midpoint of the first and second posts in the fence line. Check with a level for straightness, and adjust as necessary. Fasten the panel to both posts by driving two nails through the ends of each fence rails. Repeat for every panel.

Tips and warnings

Setting the fence posts and fastening the panels to them are much easier with the assistance of a helper.

Gate posts bear more weight than line posts, so if you intend to install a gate in your picket fence, set these posts in concrete. Instead of filling the post hole in with dirt, pour in quick-setting concrete up to a few inches from the top. After the concrete plug dries, fill in the rest of the hole with dirt.
