How to put wood stain over wood stain

Applying wood stain to an already stained piece of furniture is a similar process to applying the original stain. You will need to remove the protective varnish coat with a good sanding, and then apply a darker stain to the wood. You do not need to remove the stain, which the wood has probably absorbed completely. It is not possible to stain a piece of furniture a lighter colour with this method, but you can make the piece darker.

Things you need

De-glosserClean cloths180 grit sandpaperTack clothProtective glovesGel stainWhite China bristle brushWater based sealerPaintbrush

Instructions

1 Dampen a clean cloth with a wood deglosser and wipe down the entire surface of the already stained piece. The deglosser will remove any grease and excessive shine from the varnish. Let the piece dry according to the package directions.

2 Sand the piece down with a 180 grit piece of sandpaper, following the grain of the wood. Sand until you have removed the clear varnish protective coat that covers the stained wood.

3 Wipe down the piece with a tack cloth to remove the dust from sanding.

4 Put on protective gloves so you don't stain your hands with the gel stain.

5 Apply gel stain directly onto the stained piece of furniture with a white China bristle brush, following the grain of the wood. Apply two to three strokes at a time, let it sit for 15 seconds, then wipe the stain off with a clean rag to remove any excess. Repeat until you have stained the entire piece.

6 Let the wood stain dry according to the package directions. If you want a darker colour, repeat the stain application until you achieve the colour you're looking for.

7 Apply a water-based sealer over the entire piece with a small paintbrush, following the grain of the wood. Let it dry for six hours.
