By changing the exterior colour or siding materials of a ranch house, you can often increase its market value by a significant amount. Changing the landscaping, lighting and walkways will make a big difference. It's important to study the exterior of new homes on the market to see what's in style. Use colours, textures and special touches that look current with what's being sold. Remodel the home to harmonise with the neighbourhood or natural landscape vs. having an exterior that stands out too much.

Instructions

1 Go over ideas for exterior colours and materials. Drive through upscale neighbourhoods to see homes that combine stucco, stacked stone and neutral-coloured brick, for example. Come up with a general plan to remodel your ranch home in the best possible way. Create needed substitutions to save money, if needed, but start with an ideal makeover.

2 Make sketches to improve the front facade. Draw a different porch design, for example. Plan to enclose the porch with glass or add new railings. Sketch the porch roof with cedar shakes and a skylight to see how this fits with the home design. Include new landscaping in the design plan and a well-planned front walkway. Draw the front steps and walkway covered in patio bricks, as one option.

3 Plan to add larger windows and new shutters. Change some of the windows to give the home a different look. Use bay windows, for example. Install glass bricks in window space at the end of a hallway or above the bathtub space. Buy shutters that are heavier in design or wider to change the look of the exterior.

4 Paint older bricks with high-quality primer and custom paint. Use products designed especially for bricks. Paint the bricks with cream-coloured paint and add pale taupe shutters, as one option. Install a roof colour that matches the shutters for a well-designed look. Add stacked stone in certain sections of the front facade, especially around the porch area.

5 Install new lighting on porches and in yard areas. Include solar lights on stakes around all four sides of the house. Place these lights every 6 to 8 feet along a landscaped border around the house.

Tips and warnings

Plan the construction upgrade in logical steps. Start with the roof, overhangs and guttering to make the house look newer. Build overhangs wider to accommodate thicker wood siding added over the bricks, for example.
