Deadbolts are a simple, yet secure means of locking an exterior door against unwanted entry. They are available in a wide range of strengths and types, from simple key-operated locks to more expensive electronic versions. When a standard deadbolt needs to be removed, as part of a door refinishing or replacement or for a lock upgrade, the procedure is simple.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Phillips screwdriver3/32-inch Allen wrench (optional)

Instructions

1 Open the entry door, then turn the interior thumb latch into the vertical position. This will partially extend the deadbolt's slide bolt.

2 Hold the door edge over the deadbolt's slide bolt to hold both halves of the deadbolt assembly, then remove the thumb latch mounting screws, using a Phillips screwdriver. For double-keyed deadbolts, with no thumb latch and a key insert on both sides, remove the screws with an Allen wrench. The interior and exterior deadbolt cylinders are free of the door and can be removed.

3 Detach the slide bolt mechanism from the door's edge by removing the two small screws securing the slide bolt's face plate, then pull the partially extended slide bolt to remove the mechanism from the door to complete the deadbolt removal.
