How to Remove a Wedge Pin Assembly on a Schwinn Airdyne

The wedge pin is an important part on older model Schwinn Airdyne exercise bikes. A wedge pin can be found on both sides of the crank arms that attach to the pedals on Scwhinn Airdyne 3, Schwinn Airdyne 4 and older Schwinn Airdyne Evolution Pro/Comp model bikes. These are all upright bikes. The newer Schwinn Airdyne Evolution Pro/Comp have a square bottom bracket axle instead of a wedge pin style, according to FitnessRepairParts.com. If the wedge pin becomes worn or damaged, you will need to remove it and replace it with a new wedge pin assembly.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Adjustable wrench

Instructions

1 Locate the wedge pin assembly on either side of the Schwinn Airdyne bike. The wedge pin assembly connects to the crank arm, which attaches to the pedal.

2 Use an adjustable wrench to remove the locknut on the thread side of the wedge pin assembly. Turn counterclockwise to loosen the locknut and then use your hand to unscrew the locknut and remove.

3 Slide the wedge pin assembly out the opposite side of the crank arm from the non-threaded side.

4 Replace the old wedge pin assembly with a new one in the same direction that the old pin was in. Replace the locknut on the threaded end of the wedge pin assembly. Tighten in a clockwise direction as much as you can with your hand. Use the adjustable wrench to finish tightening the locknut in place.

5 Repeat on the other side if needed. Check that the wedge pin assemblies are correctly installed by looking at the Schwinn Airdyne bike crank arms from the side. The pedals should be 180 degrees opposite of each other so that if the left crank arm points straight up toward the ceiling, the right crank arm will point straight down toward the floor. Remove one wedge pin and move the crank arm into the correct position, then reinstall if the crank arms are not aligned properly.

6 Move the crank arms so that they are both parallel to the floor. The threaded end of the wedge pin assembly with the locknut should point upwards on one side of the bike and the non-threaded end of the wedge pin should point upwards on the other side if installed correctly. Remove one of the wedge assembly pins and reinsert it in the opposite direction if the wedge pins are not pointing in opposite directions.

Tips and warnings

A wedge pin assembly for Schwinn Airdyne bikes costs less than a 60p and can be ordered online.
