How to Remove the Starter From a 1997 Corolla

Your 1997 Toyota Corolla won't start. All you hear is a clicking sound when you turn the key. If the battery is OK, the next logical place to check is the starter motor. When the starter won't start, the engine won't either. Removing the starter on a 1997 Toyota Corolla isn't incredibly difficult, thanks to its accessibility from the top of the engine, but it will take about 30 minutes.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Flat screwdriverOpen-end wrench set3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets

Instructions

1 Remove the air filter assembly from the engine compartment using the flat screwdriver. Use your hands to lift out the air filter assembly and the tubing connecting it to the throttle body, and place it to the side.

2 Remove the negative terminal on the battery using an open-end wrench. Remove the positive terminal on the battery using the same technique.

3 Locate the starter motor on the transmission. The starter will have an electrical harness plugged into it as well as a thick battery cable bolted to the motor. Remove the connections using an open-end wrench.

4 Unbolt the starter from the transmission using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Lift it out of the engine compartment and set it to the side.
