The intense smell of urine in your house, car or clothing can permeate the air and cause you much grief. Having small children or pets that have urine accidents on their bed, walls or carpet can be a constant challenge. Knowing how to clean and neutralise the urine odour is a necessity.

Skill level:Moderately Challenging

Things you need

BowlSpoonTeaspoonMeasuring cupBaking sodaDishwashing soapHydrogen peroxidePaper towelsVinegarClub sodaAmmoniaMouthwashCornstarchVacuum

Instructions

1 Remove urine odour on carpet with this home made remedy. Mix in a glass bowl 2 tsp baking soda, 2 small drops of dishwashing soap and 473ml of hydrogen peroxide. Stir until the baking soda is dissolved, gently stir-you don't want it to foam up. If the urine accident was recent, blot up the excess urine with paper towels. Pour the mixture on the urine spot, covering it completely. Saturate the carpet all the way down into the carpet pad. Do not rub or scrub, just allow it to soak there for 24 hours. After 24 hours, using clean paper towels blot up the excess remedy mixture. Let the spot air dry. The smell should be neutralised when the area is dry. Lift your pad and carpet if you can so that it will dry thoroughly.

2 The active ingredient in this mixture is the hydrogen peroxide. When you mix these three ingredients together use them within an hour. Do not store them with a lid on, because the mixture creates oxygen and the container may start to expand or the lid will pop off.

3 Remove urine odour from bedding or clothing by soaking the clothing in the washing machine with a large batch of the baking soda, dishwashing soap and hydrogen peroxide. You can add just enough water to be able to cover all the clothing or bedding. Let it soak over night and then wash as usual. Make sure to spot check the fabric to make sure the peroxide won't bleach it out.

4 Remove urine odour from mattresses or furniture by using the same directions as urine in the carpet, making sure to pour enough of the mixture on the area so that it will penetrate deep down into the mattress or foam pad of the furniture.

5 Remove urine smell from concrete by pouring the baking soda mixture onto the entire area that was urinated on. Soak the area completely and just let it dry, no need to wipe it up. Pour a batch of the mixture on the urinated concrete once a day for up to five days.

6 Always test a small discreet area of the carpet, upholstery or fabric first to make sure the peroxide does not bleach or fade it. Make a gallon recipe of the urine removal mixture by mixing 16 cups of hydrogen peroxide, 16 tsp of baking soda and a 1/2 tsp of dish soap. Do not shake, just gently stir--you do not want it to foam. If the hydrogen peroxide will bleach out the fabric or carpet, you can substitute vinegar, club soda, ammonia or mouthwash in place of the peroxide. Test this mixture before using it as well to make sure it doesn't bleach or discolour the fabric.

7 Another method of removing urine odour is sprinkling cornstarch on the urine area and leave it for 24 hours. Use a wet rag to wipe up the mixture the next day or vacuum if the cornstarch is dry and powdery. If you can take the furniture item that was urinated on out into the sun, the sun may help neutralise the urine smell and dry it out. You can use one of the above mixtures on it first and then take it outside to dry.
