If you live in the United States but hold a passport from the United Kingdom, you can only renew your passport at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. According to the British Embassy, it takes at least four weeks to process your passport application. The embassy also points out the importance of a correct application, stating that it rejects as many as 1,000 applications a month, due to errors.

1 Get your passport photos taken. You must submit two passport photos with your renewal application to the United Kingdom Embassy. Photos must meet the standards issued from the International Civil Aviation Organization. According to the United Kingdom's government, the standards states that the photo must have colour, have been taken less than a month ago, have sharpness, have no red-eye, show your entire head, and show you facing forward with a neutral expression. The British Embassy in Washington, D.C. states that Walgreens and CVS can provide photos that meet the required standards.
2 Download and print the passport application form from the British Embassy Washington's website. Citizens living outside the United Kingdom need to download form C1.
3 Complete the passport application form in ink. When renewing a U.K. passport that is still valid or only recently expired, you do not need to provide supporting documents, such as birth certificates. You must provide an e-mail address in section 1a.
4 Chose the method you want to use to pay for your new passport. The British Embassy in Washington, D.C., will not accept fees made with certified personal checks or personal checks, or payments not in U.S. dollars. You can pay the fee with a certified or cashier's check made out to the British Embassy Government Account, money order or credit card. If you want to pay by credit card, complete the authorisation form found on the British Embassy Washington's website. The British Embassy Washington states that the passport renewal fee for an adult with a 32-page passport, as of May 2010, is £132.
5 Mail your application to: The UK Passport Service for the Americas and Caribbean British Embassy 19 Observatory Circle, NW Washington D.C., 20008. Send the application using the registered courier services offered by FedEx, UPS or DHL. Make sure the envelope includes the C1 form, two photos, the old passport and the fee or credit card authorisation form.
