How to Repair a BlackBerry 8350i SIM Card Holder

The Blackberry 8350i was designed and built for the Sprint/Nextel iDEN network. This smartphone is unique because it gives users access to the Sprint/Nextel Push-to-Talk service, a walkie-talkie service that allows the user to have up to 20 real-time conversations with other users who have the Push-to-Talk feature on their mobile phones. Because this BlackBerry runs on the iDEN network, unlike most Sprint cellphones, it comes equipped with a SIM card, a small, rectangular card that stores the user's registration information and phonebook.

Instructions

1 Remove the back cover and battery from the phone. Press the small silver button on the bottom portion of the cover and slide the cover down. Take out the battery by prying it from the compartment and pulling it out of the phone.

2 Remove the SIM card. The SIM card is inserted face down with the clipped corner at the top right. Fit your fingernail under this edge and pull the card out by sliding it to the right.

3 Inspect the SIM card holder for damage. If the clip on the holder is chipped or cracked and the SIM card no longer makes a secure connection, insert the SIM card back into the phone with the clipped section at the top right and the metal connectors facing down. Place a small piece of adhesive tape over the card but do not cover any of the metal connections on the phone.

4 Inspect the metal connection points between the SIM card and the BlackBerry. Use canned air to clean the metal points by blowing out any debris from inside the SIM holder. Then, put a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and wipe the metal connections on both the SIM card holder and the SIM card itself. Let dry and then insert the SIM card back into the phone.

5 Install the battery into the BlackBerry, making sure the connections on the battery align with those in the phone. Slide the battery cover back into place.

6 Turn on the BlackBerry 8350i by holding the "End Call/Power" key on the front of the device. The key is marked with an icon that looks like a red handset.

Tips and warnings

It can take up to 10 minutes for the phone to restart and even longer for data services to be restored. If data services are not restored within an hour, call Sprint/Nextel to troubleshoot the issue at 800-639-6111.

If these troubleshooting tips don't work, the SIM card may be defective. Take the BlackBerry to a Sprint/Nextel service centre for diagnosis and repair.
