How to repair a single handle shower valve

Single-handled shower valves are usually one of two types: cartridge or ball-valve. The operation of a shower valve is essentially the same as that of a faucet, as is the procedure for repairing it. When the valve is used to change the water flow from the tub faucet to the shower, it is called a diverter, and it is repaired in the same way.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Phillips-head screwdriver or Allen wrenchChannel locksO-rings (optional)Replacement cartridge (optional)Replacement washer (optional)Replacement valve mechanism (optional)

Instructions

1 Turn off the water to the shower before you begin. You may have to search for the water shut-off in the basement or under the house. Turn off the main water supply to the house if you can't find it.

2 Remove the screw holding the handle to the faucet. You may need a small Phillips screwdriver or an Allen key, depending on the model.

3 Use channel locks to unscrew the nut holding the valve assembly in place. Some cartridges are held in place by a pin and if this is the case, pull out the pin with channel locks. Set the nut or pin aside.

4 Lift out the cartridge, noting its orientation in the valve seat. Inspect it for worn O-rings and replace these as needed. If the cartridge appears damaged or corroded, you will have to replace it.

5 Inspect the washer around the valve seat of ball-type valves. If it appears worn, pry out the valve seat with a screwdriver and replace the washer. Check that the ball is correctly seated on the valve seat and that the springs are correctly in place and functional. If any plastic parts of the valve or valve seat are chipped or corroded, replace the entire valve mechanism.

6 Re-insert the new valve mechanism, making sure that springs are placed correctly in ball valves and that cartridges are put back in the same orientation they were in when you took them out.

7 Put the pin back or tighten the holding nut. Affix the handle and tighten the screw holding it. Turn the water on and test the faucet.

Tips and warnings

Take the entire valve mechanism to the hardware store for a replacement. This is the easiest way to ensure you buy the correct one.

Don't forget to turn the water off before you start. If you remove a valve while the water is on, the water will run full-force and you won't be able to replace the valve until it is turned off.
