Grandfather clocks are traditional types of clocks that are both timeless and elegant. These types of clocks add to the decor within a home, and often have distinct chiming sounds within the clock as the clock strikes on the hour. There are complex inner mechanisms within grandfather clocks that run in synchronised motion within the clock casing. Near the face dial, there is a spring inside the clock that is wound with a key from the outside on the old antique clocks.

Flathead screwdriverClock service kit

Instructions

1 Check the spring mechanism first before examining other parts of the clock. Sometimes the inner spring is broken, and the clock cannot be wound, thus ceasing to function properly. Set the clock mechanisms to "off," and remove the spring. Examine it for any obvious damage.

2 Use a clock servicing kit that comes with clock oil to oil the spring and pivot points within the clock. Sometimes old springs cease to work because they need to be oiled at least once every three years. Replace the spring with a new spring, if it cannot be repaired.

3 Examine the grandfather clock for the opening to the glass casing. Sometimes, grandfather clock fronts are entirely encased with glass; in others, only the face is encased. Open the glass in front of the clock face with use of flat head screwdriver. Be careful not to break the glass.

4 Turn the larger hand on the clock face counterclockwise, to make sure that they are in working order. The spring might get stuck and fail to work properly if the pendulum and hands of the clock are faulty. Make sure the clock hand is wound around one time, and listen for the chime to make a striking sound. Never overwind the clock, for this can damage the spring inside and the timing mechanism. Adjust the dial on the clock. Press on the dial to set it accordingly.

5 Adjust the pendulum, if it is off centre. See that the grandfather clock is on a steady surface, and reattach the pendulum. Repair the speed on the clock by adjusting the pendulum. Move the bob of the pendulum up the shaft to make the pendulum move faster. Move the bob down the shaft of the pendulum to slow it down.

6 Balance the weights within the clock. Align the weights properly. Look at the bottom of the weights to note where they are labelled. Make sure the weights are in their proper place: left, right and centre. Make sure that the chimes, weights and pendulum are not tangled, for this could lead to problems within the mechanisms of the clock and add wear to the spring.
