Houses settle over time, which means that interior walls that have tile on them may eventually crack or even break. Before you begin to fix wall tile, obtain matching tile to use as wall tile replacement. Tile wall repair requires patience. You don't want to damage surrounding tiles as you remove cracked tiles. Check the drywall under the tile for damage before you begin. If it doesn't require repair, you can fix wall tile yourself with a few simple tools.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Utility knifeHammerNail setTile nippersPutty knifeThinset mortarTrowelGroutGrout floatSpongeClean cloth

Instructions

1 Run the edge of a utility knife along the grout lines surrounding the damaged tile to score the grout and to loosen it. If you are repairing more than one tile, score around all of the tiles. Chip out as much of the grout as you can. Expose the spacer lugs on the wall tiles.

2 Break out small sections of the broken tile, using a hammer and nail set. Start in the middle and work your way toward the edge of the tile. Angle the nail set so it points away from the edge of the tile. This causes less damage to surrounding tiles.

3 Clip the spacer lugs off the replacement tile with tile nippers.

4 Remove as much of the mortar behind the broken tile as possible, using a putty knife. When you dry-fit the new tile in the opening, it needs to be flush with the surrounding tiles.

5 Mix a small amount of thinset mortar according to package directions. Apply an even coat of thinset to the wall, using a small trowel. Butter the back of the tile with thinset as well. Put more thinset in the middle of the tile than around its edges. Set the tile in place on the wall. Allow the thinset to set up overnight.

6 Apply grout to the spaces around the new tile. Work the grout into the crevices with a tile float. Smooth the spaces with your fingers. Allow the grout to dry for 30 minutes.

7 Wipe the surface of the tiles with a clean, damp sponge. Do not damage the grout, just wipe the tiles. When the grout dries completely, buff the tiles clean with a soft cloth.

Tips and warnings

If the tile doesn't stay in place, hold it in position until the mortar dries with painter's tape.
