How to Repair Coleman Vinyl

There is nothing worse than burning a hole through, or tearing a corner on, your Coleman vinyl mattress or seat. You get that sick feeling in your stomach because you don't know how to repair it. Fortunately repairing vinyl isn't complicated. The catch is that you must have patience. The materials used to repair vinyl are malleable, which means you can sew, iron or glue them on. Leather and canvas products are limited in their repair options. Make vinyl repairs in a garage to minimise the amount of dust in your work area. Anything that gets under the vinyl patch will eventually weaken the bond of the glue from an iron-on patch or fabric adhesive.

Instructions

1 Cut any frays or jagged edges from the tear in the vinyl. Add fabric contact cement around the edges of the tear to strengthen the bond with the iron-on patch.

2 Use a coloured, iron-on vinyl patch for the repair. The goal is to match the colour of the damaged vinyl as closely as you can. Insert the patch through the tear and place the adhesive backing of the patch on the back of the vinyl's damaged area.

3 Push a hot iron onto the area where the iron-on patch and the damaged vinyl meet. Many vinyl repair kits contain small, electric irons for use with iron-on patches. Let the iron sit on that spot without moving for 30 to 40 seconds. The adhesive is melting and adhering to the material.

4 Set another iron-on patch on the front of the area you are repairing. Make sure the adhesive part is facing down. Press the hot iron onto the area for 30 to 40 seconds, allowing the adhesive to melt and adhere to the material.

5 Dry the patched area with a hair dryer for one or two minutes. Don't sit on the patch for at least 24 hours to give the adhesive a chance to completely cure.

Tips and warnings

Iron-on vinyl patches work on furniture, car seats, boats, campers and air beds.

If you don't let the fabric glue dry, then the patch won't hold.
