For those who want to restore or rebuild a Corvette, the first step is removing rust from the two areas most vulnerable to rust: the frame and the birdcage. The birdcage "bolts onto the chassis side rails and includes door posts and a windshield frame," according to the Second Chance Garage website. This area rusts when it is subjected to a lot of moisture. Removing the rust from the birdcage takes time but is possible.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Steel wool padNaval jellyRags or paper towelsRust-proof primerPaintbrush

Instructions

1 Scrape off the surface rust on the birdcage with a steel wool pad.

2 Pour naval jelly onto the steel wool pad. Apply enough jelly to completely cover the rusted areas.

3 Leave the naval jelly on for five to 10 minutes or according to the instructions on the label. The phosphoric acid in naval jelly quickly dissolves the rust on the cylinder.

4 Clean away all traces of naval jelly and rust with rags or paper towels.

5 Apply an automotive rustproof primer to the birdcage with a paintbrush. The primer acts as a barrier to moisture and prevents rust from forming. Allow the primer to dry.
