How to Repair Screens on Screened Porches

A screened porch lets homeowners enjoy warm summer nights without the intrusion of mosquitoes and other pests. However, if your screened porch has a rip or tear, the barrier can be compromised by the very pests you are trying to keep away from the porch. Rips and tears in the screen of a screened porch can be repaired without replacing the entire section using a straight forward procedure.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

2-by-2 foot piece of plywoodUtility knifeTape measurePiece of screenWire cutters

Instructions

1 Place a 2-by-2 piece of plywood on one side of the screen in the location of the damage. The plywood will provide a solid surface to cut the screen without pushing it out. Have a helper hold the plywood against the screen as you work from the other side.

2 Cut out a section of the screen around the damaged area an inch or two beyond the tear or hole in every direction with a utility knife. Make the cut as square as you can, which will be easier to work with than an odd-shaped hole.

3 Pull apart the screen you cut out into individual strands. It should be fairly easy to separate the horizontal strands from the vertical strands.

4 Measure the size of the hole you cut using a tape measure.

5 Cut a piece of screen from the piece you purchased from a hardware store. Cut the screen to the dimensions of the hole you cut, plus an inch longer on every side.

6 Place the screen over the damaged area and start to weave it in place using the strands you acquired from the piece you previously cut. Insert the end of the first strand through the second row in on the screen beginning in a corner. Have a helper on the other side of the screen push the strand back through next hole. Continue using this method to stitch the patch to the damaged part of the screen. Twist strands together when the end is reached on each one and cut off excess using wire cutters. Continue until the entire perimeter of the patch has been stitched.
