The drive belt on a Murray riding lawnmower is responsible for turning the cutting blades and propelling the lawnmower forward. You should inspect the drive belt periodically to make sure it is not fraying or cracking. The drive belt should be replaced no less than every 100 hours of use. Murray does not have a complicated pulley system, so replacing the belt is a task that should only take about an hour of your time.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Instructions

1 Disengage the blade rotation control. Place the lift lever in the levelling position. Pull out the hair pins from both rear suspension arms.

2 Extract the hair pins and washers from the suspension links. These are located on either side on the top of the mower housing. Stretch the spring toward the blade control rod and remove the hook from the hole.

3 Remove the front hanger from the frame support and take the mower drive belt off the stack pulley. Pull the entire housing out from under the mower, from the right-hand side.

4 Open the belt retainer of the idler pulley (the smaller pulley to the right of the larger jackshaft pulley). Unwind the belt from around the idler pulley.

5 Free the mower drive belt from around the jackshaft pulley by pulling the brake pad away from the pulley. Slide the belt out of this opening.

6 Wrap the new belt around the jackshaft pulley. Fit the belt between the belt retainer and idler pulley and wrap it around the idler pulley.

7 Push the mower housing back underneath the mower from the right-hand side. Follow Steps 1 through 3 in reverse to reconnect the housing to the lawnmower.

Tips and warnings

When you're installing the new belt, be sure that the side pointed like a "V" is located against both the jackshaft pulley and the idler pulley.
