The variable steering system controls the amount of power steering fluid running through the system at a given time, adding more fluid during more extreme turns and less fluid during mild turns. The system on a Oldsmobile Alero is controlled by an actuator attached to the power steering pump, often referred as an "EVO" actuator. If power steering problems appear, accompanied by a warning light on the instrument panel, the actuator should be replaced.

Things you need

3/8-inch socket wrenchSocket setFlex socketPliersWrench setViceCrescent wrenchNeedle-nose pliersTorque wrenchPower steering fluidHydraulic vehicle jack

Instructions

1 Insert a 3/8-inch ratchet wrench into the centre hole on the drive belt tensioner. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to release the tension on the belt, then remove the drive belt from the tensioner pulley. Pull the socket wrench from tensioner. Slip the belt off of the power steering pump pulley.

2 Remove the rubber fluid return hose from the power steering pump, squeezing the hose clamp with pliers and pulling the hose from the pump. Remove the metal fluid pressure line, loosening the fitting with a wrench and separating the line from the pump.

3 Unplug the electrical connections to the actuator. Unscrew the bolt holding the actuator retaining strap in place with a socket wrench. Pull the strap away from the actuator and remove the actuator.

4 Unscrew the power steering pump mounting bolts, only accessible through the holes in the power steering pump pulley, with a socket wrench and a flex socket. Unplug the electrical connection to the EVO actuator on the side of the pump. Pull the power steering pump from the engine compartment.

5 Place the power steering pump in a vice. Place a crescent wrench on the power steering line fitting and loosen the entire power steering line fitting and EVO actuator with a crescent wrench until it separates from the power steering pump. Separate the EVO actuator from the power steering line fitting with needle-nose pliers.

6 Lubricate the o-rings on the power steering line fitting and the EVO actuator. Attach the fitting and actuator with needle-nose pliers. Place the fitting and actuator into the power steering pump and tighten it with a crescent wrench.

7 Remove the power steering pump from the vice and position it in place in the engine compartment. Install the power steering pump mounting bolts with a torque wrench and flex socket. Tighten the bolts to 25 foot-pounds. Plug in the electrical connector to the EVO actuator.

8 Place the cruise control actuator on the bracket and pull the strap over the actuator. Install the strap bolt with a socket wrench. Plug in the electrical connections to the cruise control actuator.

9 Attach the rubber fluid return hose to the power steering pump, squeezing the hose clamp with pliers and pushing the hose from the pump. Attach the metal fluid pressure line, tightening the fitting with a wrench.

10 Insert a 3/8-inch ratchet wrench into the centre hole on the drive belt tensioner. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to release the tension on the belt, then guide the drive belt over the power steering pump pulley and over the tensioner pulley. Release the socket wrench from the tensioner to create tension on the drive belt.

11 Add power steering fluid to the reservoir, then bleed the power steering system. Start the engine and check the fluid lever after a few seconds. Add fluid if necessary. Raise the car with a hydraulic vehicle jack. Rev the engine to 1500rpm and turn the steering wheel slowly from left-stop to right-stop. Check the fluid level and add fluid if necessary. Lower the vehicle and drive it from a full right-stop to a full left-stop. Check the fluid reservoir and any fluid if necessary.
