How to Replace Seals & Springs in a Delta Shower Faucet

Double handle Delta shower faucets use a ball and seat mechanism for water control rather than a cartridge. When you find constant drips coming from either the shower head or the spout, the most common problem is bad seats. The seats are sometimes referred to as "seals." You can replace the seats and springs and stop the leak. Replacement Delta seats and springs are available at home improvement centres and plumbing supply stores.

Instructions

1 Find the shut-off valves for the shower. The access to the shut-off valves are usually in the room adjacent to the shower. There will be an access door to the plumbing inside the wall. Turn the shut-off valves clockwise to turn off the water. If you cannot find the shut-off valves, shut off the main water supply to the house.

2 Remove the handles from the Delta shower faucet. There is a decorative cover on the centre of each handle that you can pry off with a flathead screwdriver. Removing the cover reveals the handle-securing screw. Remove the screw with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Grab the handle and pull the handle straight off the faucet.

3 Remove the decorative cover plate from the faucet handle assembly. This plate should pull straight off without much force.

4 Locate the adjusting ring securing the stem assembly to the faucet. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to turn the adjusting ring counterclockwise to remove the ring from the faucet assembly.

5 Pull the white cam assembly that covers the faucet ball on each handle. The cam fits over a notch in the faucet body and you will need to fit the cam back over the notch when you reassemble the faucet.

6 Grab the ball by the long stem and set it in a safe place. Locate the seats in the bottom of the faucet body. Insert a small Allen wrench into the seats and lift the seats out of the faucet. The seat springs are attached to the bottom of the seats and will come out with the seats.

7 Press the new springs under the bottom of each new seat, with the larger portion of the spring pointing away from the seat. Insert the new seats into the faucet with the springs going in first. Place the faucet ball back into the faucet body and place the cam over the ball and faucet.

8 Thread the adjusting ring into the faucet body until the ring is hand tight. Turn the ring another half turn with the needle nose pliers. Insert the handle over the faucet body and secure the handle to the faucet with the retaining screw.

9 Push the cap back into place on each handle and turn the water supply back on.
