How to replace the female end of an extension cord

Extension cords are vulnerable to damage because of the circumstances under which they are used. The plugs are particularly vulnerable. As extension cords are one of the most misused electrical items in the home, their maintenance is important. According to the U.S Fire Administration you should "routinely check your electrical appliances and wiring." Do-it-yourself replacement of extension cord plugs saves time and money by keeping the cord in a safe and usable condition. Replacing the female plug requires a basic understanding of electricity and wiring and access to two common tools.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Utility knifeElectrician's screwdriverExtension cord female plug

Instructions

1 Remove the old female plug. For plugs moulded to the extension cord, use a knife to cut it off, keeping as much of the cord as possible. Remove plugs attached with screws or clips by unscrewing them or prying open the clips with an electrician's screwdriver.

2 Open the new plug and feed the cord through the cable hole in the housing. Feed sufficient cord through the plug so you can work on the end of the cord without the plug getting in your way.

3 Check the wires at the end of the cord. With the insulated part of the cord level with the cable grip, the ends of the wires must reach the terminals. They must not looked stretched or bunched up. If the wires are not the correct length, trim them to size or remove more of the outer insulation to expose a greater length of wire.

4 Attach the wires to the plug terminals. The black "hot" wire attaches to the brass terminal, the white "neutral" wire to the silver/white terminal and the bare or green covered grounding wire goes to the green terminal. The grounding terminal may be marked as GND.

5 Prevent the cord pulling loose from the plug by securing it firmly using the cord grip. Reassemble the plug housing, reversing the way in which you dismantled it. The plug is wired and ready for use.

Tips and warnings

Check extension cables before they are used.

Replace parts before they become dangerous.

Electricity is dangerous. It may cause fires, injury or death. If you are in any doubt, consult an electrician and do not attempt "do it yourself" electrical repairs.

Do not use extension cables in areas where they may become wet, abraded or overheated.
