How to Replace the Starter in a 1991 Toyota Previa

When your 1991 Toyota Previa won't start, the first thing you need to do is determine why. Go through all the fuses and relays to be sure they are in proper working order. If they are good, you need to check the battery to be sure it's holding a proper charge. If the battery is fine, too, then your starter is definitely the culprit leaving your vehicle sitting. Thankfully, replacing the starter is uncomplicated and won't take much time.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Automobile jackJack standWheel chocksMetric socket setMetric wrench set

Instructions

1 Disconnect the negative battery terminal by loosening the nut with a wrench. Place the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.

2 Jack the vehicle up and place a jack stand under the frame near the jacking point. Raise the jack stand up to the frame.

3 Remove the nut on the starter with a wrench and remove the cable from it. Unplug the wiring harness from the starter.

4 Remove the bolts holding the starter in place on the engine using a socket and ratchet.

5 Put a new starter into place and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet.

6 Plug the wiring harness back into the starter and reconnect the main cable wire. Tighten the nut using a wrench.

7 Remove the jack stand from under the vehicle and lower it back to the ground. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten the nut with a wrench. Start the vehicle and test the installation.

Tips and warnings

When you are working under the vehicle, be sure to wear safety glasses to prevent possible injury to your eyes.

Always make sure you complete Step 1 and remove the negative battery terminal or you will be at risk of electrical shock.
