Economical wine in a box has two components, besides the wine: a rigid cardboard box, and a heavy plastic bladder that sometimes has a silver coating to minimise light exposure. The cardboard is recyclable, but the bladder may not be. Instead of tossing it, reuse your empty wine box as an organiser for mail or an ice pack, saving you money and keeping your clutter under control while you do your part for the environment.

Instructions

Mail Organizer

1 Remove the empty bladder from the box.

2 Cut off the narrow side of the box with the tap hole with a utility knife.

3 Paint the box as desired; start with a white base coat as a primer, then paint it in colours to match your decor. If you like, you can glue photos and beads to the box.

4 Place the box with the open side up and use it to hold mail that is waiting to be sorted.

Freezer Pack

1 Open the tap on the empty wine bladder and rinse it out with tap water.

2 Fill the clean bladder halfway with tap water and close the tap.

3 Place the water-filled bladder in the freezer for several hours.

4 Use the frozen bladder as an ice pack for coolers or insulated bags, or to sooth a minor injury.

Tips and warnings

Wine boxes vary in size. Larger boxes are large enough to hold magazines, while smaller boxes are better sized for smaller items such as bills and letters.
