How to Run With Siberian Huskies

Siberian huskies are famous for their role as sled dogs. Bred to pull and run long distances, these dogs are energetic and hardworking. The Siberian husky is a friendly breed that is patient with children and loves the attention of humans. If a husky get bored, however, it can find its own entertainment, which can include destroying your possessions or breaking out of the yard to explore the neighbourhood. Huskies need daily exercise. Because of their energy and stamina, they can make excellent jogging companions.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

LeashHarness or head halter

Instructions

1 Train your Siberian husky to walk properly on a leash. Purchase a head halter or front-clasp harness. Gentle Leader offers both types of harness. These will restrict your husky's ability to pull on the leash (a task which it was bred to perform). Take your husky for daily walks. When it pulls, stop walking and wait for it to return to your side. Reward it with a treat and praise the instant the leash becomes loose again. Slowly withhold treats and require your dog to wait by your side for longer periods before you resume walking again.

2 Schedule your jogs for early mornings or late evenings. Siberian huskies have thick coats that are meant to withstand the coldest temperatures in Siberia and Alaska. They can overheat quickly, so don't jog in the heat of the day.

3 Start with shorter jogs, going no more than a few blocks. Your husky may not seem tired, but for safety reasons you should condition it for longer jogs by slowly building up to them. This also gives you a chance to teach your husky not to pull while jogging. If your dog tries to pull on these short jogs, stop jogging and wait for it to return to your side. Reward your husky when the leash becomes loose.

4 Carry water with you each time you take your Siberian husky out jogging. If your husky starts to overheat, stop for a rest and offer it water. Prevent heat stroke by keeping your husky cool and hydrated.

5 Purchase boots for your husky's paws if you plan to run on rocky terrain or in icy weather. These will protect your husky's paws from thorns and cuts.
