You can separate living and dining room layouts in the same room or general area with a freestanding room divider.. This is the easiest way to separate two areas. Freestanding room dividers can be made of plastic, steel, wood, or other materials. You can choose from a wide range of styles and designs. Some of them are bold enough to be conversation pieces in their own right.

Instructions

1 Decide what kind of room divider would suit your situation. You might want a subtle room divider, with a neutral colour and little or no pattern. Alternatively, you might prefer one that really makes a statement. You can have one that features a huge picture of Marilyn Monroe, the Union Jack or a beach at sunset if you wish.

2 Measure the space available for the room divider. You can find this by measuring across the space that currently separates the living room and dining room layouts. This is the maximum space available for a room divider. However, bear in mind that if you want to keep the room divider in place and be able to walk past it, you’ll need to leave some space. In most cases this will be about a metre. Subtract an amount equal to a comfortable walking space from the maximum space available. Make a note of this measurement.

3 Look at freestanding room dividers online and in furniture shops to get an idea of the one you would like. Some room dividers are constructed of hinged panels, like Ikea’s RISÖR room divider. This gives added flexibility because you can close them up completely or open them out to occupy different amounts of space. Others are in one piece, like the Take beige wood and bamboo free-standing room divider screen from Overstock. Some have ornamental holes or spaces in the panels, like the Paisley by lzf. Although this often adds aesthetic appeal to a room divider, this would not be a good choice if you want to screen off one area from the other completely. Others are novelty screens, like the Myflower Luminous screen by Made in Design. Make your choice and make your purchase according to your budget.

4 Assemble your freestanding room divider according to specific instructions. Some require no setting up. For a one piece divider, you normally only have to screw feet into the bottom by hand or with a screwdriver. For a room divider made up of more than one panel, you normally have to slot the hinge pins of one panel into the hinge holes of the adjacent panel. Set up your room divider and place it in position as required.
