Building your own paint booth can save you a great deal of time and the inconvenience of having to clean dust and paint off everything else in your workshop. You can use a paint booth to spray and restore cars, do woodwork and use a paint gun to spray anything without worrying about the mess. Paint booths can be easier to set up than you may think, and by following a few simple steps, you can create your own paint booth in your garage.

Things you need

Metal HooksString1 inch PVC or pine studsNailsDuct tapePlastic sheetsBox FansCardboard

Instructions

1 Measure out the area that you will be using for your paint booth. Measure the top, floor, corners and overhead supports so you can work out how much framing you are going to need. If you plan on setting up a large booth, it will be worthwhile to measure for a doorframe.

2 Assemble the frame of your paint booth remembering to include the doorframe or entry area. Use 1-inch PVC pipe for the from as this does not require you to glue the frame together and is inexpensive. Carefully hammer hooks into the ceiling of your garage and tie the tubing to prevent the pipes from sagging.

3 Secure the plastic sheeting to the frame using duct tape or nails. Work your way around the frame sealing the seams with more duct tape and remembering to seal any gaps along the floor to prevent dust or paint from escaping.

4 Cut gaps into the plastic sheeting for the intake and exhaust fans. These fans are essential for safety reasons. If your paint booth is relatively small one fan will be adequate but larger booths can require up to three fans on each end. Use standard box fans and seal the plastic sheeting around them using duct tape, ensuring that no plastic can be dragged into the fans. Add inexpensive filters to the fans to prevent dust from being introduced into the booth.

5 Secure the cardboard or light wood door in place with more duct tape. Keep a roll of duct tape in the booth so you can see the door once you are inside.

6 Check around the booth to make sure them are no gaps or rips in the plastic sheeting before you begin painting.

Tips and warnings

Make sure to wear the correct protective clothing and breathing filters when painting in the booth.
