How to Sew Your Own Mixer Cover

Creating sewing projects with one yard of fabric seems impossible. However projects like covers for appliances such as mixers is an economical way to spruce up the kitchen. Though appliances vary in size, generally these projects require as little as one yard of fabric. Measurements act as a guide to draft patterns for the mixer. Decorative trims transform covers into one-of-a-kind home decor items. Decorative stitches like zigzag or trapunto which is a triple needle stitch as well as an appliqué for personalisation also adds interesting details to the mixer cover.

Instructions

1 Measure the width, height and depth of the mixer with a flexible tape measure. Jot down the dimensions for the mixer pattern in a notepad.

2 Sketch a rough shape of the mixer on pattern paper with drafting pencils using the dimensions from step 1 as the guide. For example, if you are making a cover for a mini hand-held electric mixer measuring 3 inches in width, 10 inches in length by 7 inches in depth, draft one pattern for the front and back of the mixer measuring 3 inches width by 10 inches. Draft a second pattern for the side view measuring 10 inches in length by 7 inches in depth. Use a ruler for straight lines and a French curve ruler for shaped lines.

3 Cut out the patterns with paper scissors. Keep in mind the mixer cover has two layers: an outer shell and an inner lining. If you are using the same shell design as the lining, use the same pattern. If you are using contrast fabric inserts for the shell and a solid lining, you will need to cut separate patterns.

4 Pin the patterns with straight pins to your chosen textile such as a woven canvas or stretch knit. Use a minimum of one yard fabric to ensure you have enough for self fabric lining or trimming.

5 Cut pinned fabric out with fabric scissors to ensure smooth seams. If you are quilting the cover, you will also need to cut a 1/2 inch thick batting layer to sandwich the two layers.

6 Choose trims for the mixer cover such as self-fabric drawstrings, decorative cording or snaps. For instance, if you choose a woven fabric, make sure the pinned cover fits over the mixer. Woven fabric without a percentage of Lycra, does not stretch. Attach snaps to the back of the woven cover for ease and fit. Another decorative option is to add contrast piping inserts at the seams. Piping is a trim term referring to a narrow strip of fabric, generally a 1/8 inch width, stitched in between seams for contrast.

7 Machine stitch the cover leaving an opening to insert any selected trims. If you are adding decorative stitching such as a zigzag pattern, change the straight stitch attachment foot to a zigzag foot. If you are quilting each panel, sandwich the batting in between the two layers and construct each panel separately. If you are inserting piping in between the seams, pin the piping and remove the pins as you slowly stitch. This process prevents the piping from shifting.

8 Attach trims to the mixer cover. For instance attach snaps by placing the snaps between the jaws of the snap fastener tool. Clamp the tool shut to secure the snaps onto the fabric.
