How to Sharpen a Knife With a Whetstone

Using a whetstone is the best way to sharpen a knife and restore a quality edge to the blade. Whetstones allow you to hone the edge of the knife blade instead of grinding it to an edge as many other types of knife sharpening methods do. Sharpening a knife with a whetstone is a learned skill and you should practice on a less valuable blade until you master it.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Towel

Instructions

1 Place the whetstone on a level surface with the coarse-grit side facing up. You may find it necessary to place a towel under the stone to prevent it from sliding.

2 Hold the knife by the handle with one hand and stabilize the blade of the knife against the whetstone at a 25-degree angle.

3 Apply moderate pressure to the blade and slide the blade forward and across the stone while sliding the length of the blade across the stone as well. Take care to maintain the angle of the blade at 25 degrees.

4 Slide the blade across the stone 10 times on ones side and then flip the blade over and repeat the process 10 times on the other side.

5 Turn the whetstone over to the fine grit side. Place the blade against the stone at a 25-degree angle. Slide the blade down the length of the stone and the length of the blade 10 times. Turn the knife over and repeat on the other side.

6 Wash and rinse the knife to remove any metal particles.
