How to shorten bar stools

Owning a bar stool that is the right style but the wrong height may be frustrating. You can shorten a bar stool without too much difficulty; this way, you may use stools designed for a bar counter at a cabinet-counter height. The legs may sit at an angle depending on the style of the stool, so measuring and marking the leg for the cuts are important.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Block, can or jarPencilPainter's tapeRotary sawSandpaper, 60-gritDouble-sided tapeLevel workbench or hard surfaceScrew-in glides with rubber equalisers (optional)

Instructions

1 Decide how many inches you need to shorten the stool to the desired height. Look around your house for a block of wood, can, jar or other object that is the right height. Tape a pencil to the top of the object so the pencil point overhangs the side of the object.

2 Place the stool on a flat, level surface. Face the pencil point toward the leg and move the object around the leg drawing lines on all sides of each leg. Position painter's tape above the cut lines to protect the wood of the stool leg.

3 Cut each leg following the guide lines. Lightly sand the wood to remove any burrs along the edges of the cuts. Stand the stool on the level surface. If the stool rocks a little, do some sanding to correct the minor height difference.

4 Tape 60-grit sandpaper to the workbench with double-stick tape. Move the stool legs evenly back and forth over the sandpaper to remove high spots. Sand in several directions for the best results.

5 Install screw-in glides with rubber equalisers into the bottoms of the stool legs if you want more adjustment capabilities.

Tips and warnings

Mark and cut all of your bar stools at the same time. Use the same jig or object and pencil so they all are the same height.
