Digital piracy is at an all time high and so are the number of bootleg DVDs on the market. Illegal DVDs have made strides in both recording quality and production, so purchase DVDs from a reputable source and avoid street vendors, auction websites, or people who are individually reselling movies that are still playing in theatres. For Disney films, a few immediate flags may help avoid buying a fake Disney DVD.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

One Disney DVD with box

Instructions

1 Look for the security stickers on the top or side of the shrink-wrapped box. All Disney DVDs come with one of these security seals.

2 Examine the back of the box for the "Buena Vista" print on the shrink wrap. Disney DVDs come with the Buena Vista print.

3 Make note of the weight and structure of the box. Disney DVDs come in high quality, heavier plastic cases with a place for the movie index on the inside. Bootleg cases are lighter weight and lack a table of contents or other interior flyers.

4 Pay attention to the quality of the ink used in printing the cover of the box, disc and any interior flyers. Disney DVDs only use high quality ink. Damaged or blurred cover art is a sign of a fake.

5 Locate the serial numbers circling the centre ring of the reflective side of the disc. If you cannot read all of the numbers, then the DVD is fake.

Tips and warnings

If you already bought the DVD but suspect it is a bootleg copy, watch the film. If the quality of the movie does not compare equally to any other Disney DVD you have seen, then it is not an authentic Disney copy.
