How to Start Page Numbering in the Middle of a 2003 Word Document

Microsoft Word 2003 has the ability to automatically add page numbers to a long document, making it easier to navigate through the document--particularly if the document is destined for printing. The default behaviour of this feature is to number every page of the document. However, if your document includes a cover page and table of contents, try beginning the page numbering in the middle of the document, where the content begins.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Microsoft Word 2003

Instructions

1 Launch Word 2003 and open the document that you would like to add page numbers to. Click the "Insert" menu at the top of the screen, then click "Page Numbers."

2 Use the "Position" and "Alignment" drop-down menus to select the vertical and horizontal orientation of the page numbers.

3 Remove the check from the box labelled "Show number on first page" if your document has a cover sheet, but no table of contents. If your document has a table of contents as well, click the "Format" button instead to manually specify a beginning page for page numbering.

4 Click the radio button labelled "Start At," then enter the page that you would like Word 2003 to begin numbering on.

5 Click "OK" in each open window to insert page numbers into your document. If you do not like the starting page or positioning of the page numbers, click the "Edit" menu then click "Undo Page Numbers" to start over.
