How to Stop a Lawn Mower Engine From Surging When Cold

If your lawnmower is surging when cold, it has a problem in the fuel system. There are two checkpoints to go through to ensure the engine will no longer surge. The carburettor is bolted to the side of the engine and controls the amount of fuel and air going into the engine's cylinder. A dirty air filter or debris in the carburettor's bowl can cause the engine to surge. This procedure will take 15 minutes.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

10mm wrenchDrain panCrescent wrenchCarburettor cleaner

Instructions

1 Park the lawnmower on a hard, level surface and set the parking brake. Turn the ignition key to the "off" position and raise the bonnet on the lawnmower.

2 Locate the air filter cover on top of the engine to the right. Twist the two screws off the air filter cover and slide the cover off. Remove the air filter and inspect it, replacing the filter if it is dirty. If this is not the problem, move to the next step.

3 Locate the carburettor directly under the air filter. On the bottom of the carburettor is a bowl with a bolt in the middle. Place the drain pan under the carburettor bowl and remove the bolt with the 10mm wrench. Slide off the bowl.

4 Clean the bowl by spraying it with the carburettor cleaner until all the debris is gone. Reinstall the bowl and bolt it back into the carburettor.
