How to String a Badminton Racquet

Stringing a badminton racket with fresh string can pay heavy dividends. One of the most important parts of stringing is the machine, which can cost a lot of money. However, owning a stringing machine can allow you to replace broken strings or simply change them for a different experience without having to take your racket to the pro shop each time. Different levels of string tensions will create different playing power and control levels, so if you own a stringing machine, you can try changing the tension to find what works best for your playing style.

Instructions

1 Inspect your racket's current string pattern. Write it down or take a picture if you need to. You should recreate this pattern when you put in new string. Clip the old strings and remove them from the racket's frame.

2 Place the racket in the stringing machine and clamp it tightly at the frame's top and bottom without distorting it. Begin by stringing the vertical strings. Insert the string from the outside of grommet 1A and through to grommet 36A. Weave the string around the frame and enter grommet 36B and through to grommet 1B. Tighten the string in the machine and clamp it so it remains tight.

3 Insert the second string from the outside of grommet 2A and through to grommet 35A. Weave the string around the frame and enter grommet 35B and through to grommet 2B. Again, tighten and clamp the string. Repeat this pattern of working from the middle outward, alternating sides to ensure the frame does not get pulled too tightly on one side and distort. Replace the clamps after every stringing.

4 Start cross stringing. Insert the A-side string into the outside of grommet 8A and weave it through the main strings through grommet 8B. Refer to your notes or picture to make sure you follow the same pattern. Tighten and clamp the string. Insert the string through grommet 9B and weave through to grommet 9A. Repeat this pattern of weaving until you have strung all of the grommets.

5 Tie off any loose ends of string using single-hitch or double-hitch knots, and use clippers to cut off excess bits of string. Remove the racket from the stringing machine and go play.

Tips and warnings

The average tension of a racket is between 9.53kg. and 10.4kg. A lower tension gives you more power while a higher tension allows for better control.

Do not overstretch the strings. Too much tension can quickly snap a string or distort the frame.
