Synchronisation is a way to ensure that files stored in two different locations are kept identical and up to date. If changes are made to the files in one folder, the files in the second folder will be automatically updated when the two folders are synced. Windows 7 features a utility called Sync Center that can be used to sync files on memory sticks and other devices such as smartphones and portable music players.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Windows 7Memory stick

Instructions

1 Install any software that came with your memory stick. This sometimes includes drivers that allow Windows to recognise the device.

2 Connect the memory stick to your computer. Click "Start" then "Accessories" and select "Sync Center."

3 Select "Set up new sync partnerships" from the left panel. Select your memory stick from the list of possible devices and folders.

4 Click "Set up." Select the settings and schedules you want. In one-way syncing, files are only copied from the primary to the secondary location. In two-way syncing, files are copied both ways. Click "Sync" to sync the computer and memory stick.

Tips and warnings

Some memory sticks are not compatible with Sync Center. The device manufacturer may supply their own syncing software and the exact instructions for syncing may vary depending on the software.
