How to Take Apart a Kenmore Dryer

Manufactured by Whirlpool, Kenmore appliances are sold by Sears. The Kenmore brand has a carefully cultivated if not also deserved reputation for reliability. But even the most reliable washer or dryer is bound to need repair at some point. For most major repairs on a Kenmore dryer, you will have to disassemble the dryer. Once the dryer is disassembled you will have access to any components that may need to be replaced, including the belt, motor, heating element, fuses and thermostats.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Phillips, flathead and hex-nut screwdriversPutty knife

Instructions

1 Unplug the dryer from the electrical socket. Slide the dryer out from the wall and disconnect the dryer vent from the back of the dryer. Remove the hex nuts along the sides of the dryer's rear panel. Lift the rear panel off the dryer and set it aside.

2 Slide a putty knife under the top panel on the left side of the dryer. Lift up on the putty knife to release the spring clip. Repeat the process on the right side. Rotate the top panel toward the back of the dryer.

3 Remove the lower kick panel if necessary. Older Kenmore dryers have lower kick panels beneath their front panels that must be removed. Pry the panel loose with a flathead screwdriver and slide it to the side. Unhook the springs from the front panel and set them aside.

4 Remove the screws along the inside edge of the dryer's front panel. Pull the top of the front panel toward you and lift it up to release the lower spring clips. Unplug the door switch wiring harness and slide the front panel off to the side of the dryer.

5 Reach underneath the dryer's drum and press the idler arm attached to the motor to release the tension on the drum belt. Unloop the drum belt from the motor pulley and idler pulley. Grab the belt and use it to help you slide the drum out of the dryer's main cabinet.

Tips and warnings

Never take apart your dryer while it is plugged in.
