How to Take Apart a Penn Spinning Reel

There are certain situations when fishermen need to disassemble their fishing reels so they can get at the inside components. Maintenance and repair are the two primary reasons, and it is also a good idea to take them apart annually for cleaning. That goes for all types of fishing reels, including the spinning reels made by the Penn fishing equipment company. While saltwater fishermen should take their reels apart and clean them more than anglers who fish exclusively in freshwater, all fishermen should know how to take apart a spinning reel.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Flathead screwdriver

Instructions

1 Turn the drag mechanism on the top of the reel counterclockwise until you can lift it off the reel. Pull the knob off, then pull off the line spool.

2 Turn counterclockwise the knob that is located on the side of the reel opposite the handle. Spin the knob until you can pull it off the reel. Grab the reel handle and pull it off the reel.

3 Find the plate on the side of the Penn reel that is held to the main body of the reel with screws. Use your screwdriver to unscrew these screws. Lift the plate off of the reel.

Tips and warnings

Carry a screwdriver along with you while fishing. It will give you the ability to take apart your reel should the need arise.

All parts of the reel combine to make it perform correctly. As a result, it is important to ensure you do not lose any of the parts when taking the reel apart. It's a good idea to place all of the reel parts onto a white cloth towel, which will keep them in one place. The white towel also provides a good background so the small screws will be easily visible.
