How to Take Off Motorcycle Brake Rotors

A motorcycle's brake rotors are exposed to tremendous forces that can deteriorate the rotors' structural integrity over time. These forces are combined with the heat generated by the motorcycle brake pads, which distort the brake rotors' surfaces to create a loss of braking effectiveness. To make matters worse, a badly distorted brake rotor will create stability issues that could lead to a crash. Luckily, removing a warped or worn-out brake rotor from your motorcycle can be done quickly and relatively easily when it's time for replacement.

Instructions

1 Remove the brake caliper(s) from the affected wheel. Break the torque on the caliper bolts, using a breaker bar, then remove the bolts completely with a socket wrench. Slide the caliper off the brake rotor and away from the lower-fork leg or swing-arm bracket.

2 Loosen the axle of the affected wheel. The front axles on most motorcycles are secured by pinch bolts on the lower fork legs and locknuts. Loosen the pinch bolts with a socket wrench. Rear axles often are secured by axle locknuts and cottar pins. Remove the cottar pin by straightening the pin's legs with pliers, and pull the pin out of the axle. Loosen either axle's locknut by breaking the torque on the locknut, using a breaker bar.

3 Lift the affected wheel off the ground, using a motorcycle stand. Remove the axle locknut, and pull the axle out from the fork or swing arm. Lower the wheel to the ground, and set it aside.

4 Place the wheel on a set of wooden blocks for support, facing the brake rotor upward. Use an appropriate Allen socket attached to a long-handled socket wrench to loosen and remove the brake rotor's bolts. Pull the rotor off the wheel. Repeat on the opposite side of the wheel if it is equipped with dual brake rotors.

Tips and warnings

Do not attempt this task if you lack the necessary equipment. Following improvised methods could create more trouble than having a properly equipped technician do the work for you.
