Calculating a rear end gear ratio yields only one part of an automobile’s final drive ratio, the transmission ratio must also be used to calculate the final drive ratio. Altering the final drive ratio on an automobile is easily done by altering the rear end gear ratio. Determining the rear end gear ratio is directly related to the amount of teeth on the ring and pinion gears in the rear end. Purchase a new set of ring and pinion gears, and the manufacturer will provide the rear end gear ratio. Purchase a used set of ring and pinion gears, however, and it will probably be necessary to manually calculate the gear ratio.

Skill level:Easy

Instructions

1 Count the number of teeth on the ring gear.

2 Count the number of teeth on the pinion gear.

3 Divide the number of ring gear teeth by the number of pinion gear teeth. This will give the rear end gear ratio, for example if the ring gear has 41 teeth and the pinion gear has 10 teeth, the rear end gear ratio is 41/10 or 4.10:1.

Tips and warnings

If you purchase a used set of ring and pinion gears, it is best to calculate the gear ratio prior to installing the gears in the rear end.

If you are changing the ring and pinion gear ratio on a four wheel drive vehicle, the front end gear ratio must match the rear end gear ratio or the drive line can be severely damaged.
