How to Throw a Great First Communion Party

First Communion parties celebrate a child's very first receipt of the sacrament of Holy Communion in the Catholic Church. Families can honour this religious occasion with a First Communion party after Mass. Your home or backyard is a suitable venue for a casual celebration with friends and family.

Skill level:Easy

Instructions

1 Send out invitations. Apart from providing information about the party location, date and time, the invitation should indicate if you want guests to attend the Mass beforehand, as well. Send out your invitations at least three weeks in advance to give guests enough notice to plan accordingly.

2 Plan a menu that will satisfy both children and adults. An array of finger foods like finger sandwiches, chicken wings or fingers, devilled eggs, pigs in a blanket, and spring rolls will be appetizing for the adults and easy for the kids to eat.

3 Decorate your venue with Communion-themed accessories. First Communion usually takes place during the spring, so use a light-coloured palette for your party decor Drape tables in white or pastel linens; use plastic tablecloths for easy cleanup. Frame pictures of the guest of honour, and add them to tabletops as centrepieces. Get your child involved in the decorating; have her draw religious figures like crosses, and frame her drawings for use as kid-created centrepieces.

4 Design a Communion-themed cake for the guest of honour. Select a white sheet cake and include a religious symbol like a cross on the cake, as well as celebratory wording such as "Kelly's First Communion."

5 Send guests home with favours. Favours are a traditional way of thanking guests for participating in your child's First Communion celebration. Bake sugar cookies in the shape of a cross, and write "Thank you for coming!" in icing. Wrap the cookies in cellophane, tie them with ribbon, and leave them at each guest's place setting.
