How to Trace With CorelDRAW X5

It's quite simple to convert a bitmap image, like a photo, into a vector graphic to edit in CorelDraw X5. The first few times you trace there will be a little fine tuning needed. After that, you'll be tracing like a pro. CorelDraw's built-in Power Trace is the most powerful version of this formerly free-standing program. CorelDraw packs trace options into the pop-up window allowing for an autotrace as well as fine-tuning the trace style to give you more control.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Instructions

Quick Trace

1 Create a "New Layer" in a CorelDraw X5 document and import the target bitmap image to the new layer. Reading the image resolution and colour character (colour, grayscale, or monochrome), Quick Trace uses default settings to generate the image.

2 Select "Quick Trace" from the "Bitmap" menu.

3 Create a new layer and move the "Group" created by Quick Trace to the new layer for editing.

4 Un-group the vector image created by Quick Trace and edit as necessary.

Centerline Trace

1 Create a "New Layer" in a CorelDraw X5 document and import the target bitmap image to the new layer. Centerline Trace is used for monochrome line drawings, such as a technical drawing.

2 Select "Centerline Trace" from the "Bitmap" menu when the "Power Trace" dialogue box opens.

3 View the traced results in the "Preview" list box, and use the controls to the right to make any necessary adjustments. "Detail" allows you to adjust the size of the vector by decreasing detail, which reduces the number of lines and nodes, or increasing detail, which adds more lines and nodes to increase accuracy.

Outline Trace

1 Select "Outline Trace" from the "Bitmap" menu when the "Power Trace" dialogue box opens.

2 Choose the type of bitmap being traced. CorelDraw Power Trace offers presets for line art, logo, detailed logo, clipart, low quality images and high-quality images.

3 View the traced results in the "Preview" list box, and use the controls to the right to make any necessary adjustments. "Detail" allows you to adjust the size of the vector by decreasing detail, which reduces the number of lines and nodes, or increasing detail by adding more lines and nodes to increase accuracy. "Smoothing" adjusts curved line accuracy and the number of nodes within an arc. "Corner Smoothness" works with "Smoothing" to improve accuracy on corners. Low settings retain the corners as shown in the preview window, high settings smooth the corner.

Tips and warnings

Trace options can be accessed from the Bitmap Property Bar.

Dialogue box options have check boxes to delete the background and whether or not to save the original image.

In CorelDraw 3.0 through 10.0, open the standalone program, CorelTrace, and follow the same steps as CorelDraw X5. Use the steps for CorelDraw X5 for Power Trace in versions X3 and X4. Increasingly sophisticated features are the difference between each of the versions.

Complex images will require more time adjusting the vector for accuracy.

Corel Power Trace leaves the original image under the created vector. Be sure to erase or move to another layer.
