How to Tune a CB Antenna Whip

CB radio whip antennas are rugged, easy to set up, and have good omnidirectional reception and transmission properties. When you're setting up your antenna, it's tempting to "set it and forget it." But if you take a little extra time to tune your antenna, you may find that you get much better performance out of your investment.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

SWR meterPencil and paperOpen-end wrench

Instructions

1 Connect the plug on the end of the antenna's transmission line to the "input" connection on a SWR (standing wave ratio) meter. Connect a cable between the "output" jack and the antenna jack of the radio.

2 Turn the radio on. Set the channel to 40 and key the microphone. While holding the microphone key, check the SWR meter reading. Note the reading on your paper.

3 Turn the radio on. Set the channel to "1" and key the microphone. While holding the microphone key, check the SWR meter reading. Note the reading on your paper.

4 Loosen the nut at the base of the antenna whip and pull the antenna out slightly -- no more than a quarter inch. If the reading on channel 1 is higher than the number on channel 40. If the reading on channel 40 is higher than on channel 1, shorten the antenna. Check the readings again and continue to adjust until the readings are very similar. Disconnect the SWR meter and connect the antenna to the radio.
